Something in Delhi.

FICA is pleased to invite you to an evening of film screening and discussion with Norwegian artist and filmmaker Lene Berg on 28th Jan at 5pm at the Vadehra Art Gallery, D-40 Defence Colony.

Berg will be screening her film "Stalin by Picasso" followed by discussion of her work.

Lene Berg was born in Oslo and is currently based in Berlin. Berg primarily works with video, photography and text. By using different medias and fictions in her installations, she explores the relationship between contemporary images and inherited conventions, between clichés and facts, between politics and rules of narration. During the last years she has been particularly focused on the distribution of ideas, and the conditions of artistic freedom in relation to political agendas.

In "Stalin by Picasso or Portrait of Woman with Moustache" (2008) she uses the scandal caused by Pablo Picassos drawing of Josef Stalin in 1953 to highlight the complex relationship between art and politics, between collective perception and individual ex-pression. The public part of the project, three façade-banners, caused controversy both in Oslo and New York during 2008, ironically mirroring what took place in 1953.

Her most recent project, "The Drowned One", was first shown at the Sydney Biennial in 2008. It presents an unusual view on the history of photography, dealing in particular with the relationship between photography and truth, using the rather unknown proto-photographer Hippolyte Bayard as a starting point.

Her project "Gentlemen and Arseholes" (2006), consisting of a video and a book, revolves around the contradictions in art and propaganda during the Cold War. The project focuses on Encounter, a cultural journal published in London and distributed during the 1950s and 60s as a vehicle for the Congress for Cultural Freedom. Berg's approach called into question what was defined as a "liberal conspiracy" and later deemed a successful state sponsored cultural effort carried out by the CIA.

In 2008 she participated in the Sydney Biennial, the Taipei Biennial, was shown at Whitechapel Gallery in London, at Fotogalleriet in Oslo and at Cooper Union in New York

Arario Gallery presents Artists in Exile, a group exhibition of works by artists of South East Asian, Middle Eastern, or Indian descent that reside in New York City. The exhibition will be on view from January 24 through February 22, 2009. A reception for the artists will be held at the Gallery on January 24 from 6 to 8pm.

“Exile” has been defined in history as being away from one’s home of birth or origin. In Greek tragedies, to wander away from home meant being exposed without protection from familiar laws, friends and family, and was seen as a fate worse than death. The artists in this exhibition bridge their cultural heritage with their country of residence; they cross reference, reinterpret and integrate cultures to express the myriad of experiences brought about by diaspora. Artists in Exile includes works by Samira Abbassy, Jaishri Abichandani, Mariam Ghani, Pooneh Maghazehe, Sara Rahbar, The Shining Mantis (Ernest Concepion and Mike Estabrook), and Sonali Sridhar and Mouna Andraos.

Comical... excellent... [This scene is] characteristic of the theatrical symbolism in Okada's work that gives it such strength. Le Soir

In the days before the U.S. began its war against Iraq in March 2003, two Japanese urban hipsters meet at a post-rock show and get swept up into a one-night stand that turns into five days’ continuous sex. Such is the anticlimactic story in Five Days in March, the prestigious Kishida Kunio Drama Award-winning play by Toshiki Okada. Characterized by seemingly insubstantial narrative accompanied by exaggerated fidgeting gestures-turned-choreography, the ground-breaking and modern works of chelfitsch Theater Company have made them the most talked-about theater company in Japan. The story unfolds through actors who slip in and out of character while casually narrating and playing out scenes. Oblivious to the imminent invasion of Iraq, the slackers obsess over the details of a love affair, perfectly capturing the irony and impotency of Generation Y in Japan today.

Modern Bombay, home to 20 million, is one of the world’s most vibrant urban centers. Its official name is Mumbai, but as author Suketu Mehta writes, the city has "multiple aliases, as do gangsters and whores." Bombay, and its relationship to New York, will be the focus of this lively evening of discussion and film clips. Mehta and film director Mira Nair are two of the most prominent Indo-American cultural figures; Nair’s acclaimed films include The Namesake, Monsoon Wedding, and Salaam Bombay! Mehta, who was born in Calcutta and raised in Bombay and New York, is the author of Maximum City: Bombay Lost and
