An Afternoon of Indian Classical Dance with Nirali Shastri & Sudeepta Bhattacherji
Saturday, December 10th from 3 – 4:30 pm
Nirali Shastri and Sudeepta Bhattacherji presents an afternoon recital of Bharatnatyam and Kathak dance. The showcase performance brings to life the two classical dance styles as well as intergrated pieces with a highlight on the "Jugalbandi" (a rhythmically followed challenge). Also featured is a work-in-progress of an integrated choreography by Nirali.
The recital explores variety of themes from classical pieces to lighthearted sing along folk style creations. Discover the mysterious symbolism of the eye, the hand movements, and the rhythmic intensity of the feet that are the hallmarks of Indian classical dance.
About the Dancers:
At the age of 11, Nirali Shastri became the youngest performer in the state of Gujurat to have completed her " Arangetrum" a 2-hour solo performance that is a momentous step in every Bharatnatyam dancer's career. She later moved to Toronto, where she acted as Assistant teacher at Nrytyakala, and was a key company dancer with the acclaimed Menaka Thakkar Dance Company.
Sudeepta Bhattacharjee began her training in kathak at the age of five under Guru Prakash Mishra and Guru Hanuman Prasad and went on to complete her bachelors under the supervision of Guru Prem Shankar from the Prayag Sangeet Samiti and her masters from Bani Chakra, one of the best dance & music schools in Kolkata.
Directions:
Subway: 7 train to Shea Stadium then 10-minute walk through park towards the Unisphere Alternatively, exit at 111th Street Station and walk south on 111th Street past the New York Hall of Science. Left on 49th Avenue into the Park. Continue past fountain over the GCP overpass. Museum is on right.
Driving: GCP to Tennis Center Exit 9P or 9E, then follow signs to Museum, or LIE East to GCP/Triboro (Exit 22B) to Tennis Ctr.
