Known for having a soft spot for women’s stories, Jagmohan Mundra, is currently starry-eyed about Sonia Gandhi’s life story. He has just finished his movie with Aishwarya Rai “Provoked”, based on the real life struggle of a domestic violence survivor, Kiranjit Ahluwalia.
From very humble beginnings in Italy to becoming the mainstay and only hope of a nation as large as India, Sonia Gandhi's whole life sounds like a fairy tale. With her move to Cambridge to learn the English language, her meeting with Rajiv Gandhi the less politically effective twin son of Indira Gandhi herself and subsequent marriage into this elite family. Then Rajiv Gandhi’s eventual rise into power as India’s prime minister, after his brother Sanjay and mother Indira’s violent deaths, brought her family into the spotlight. It was when tragedy struck that she withdrew from the limelight and refused for a time to indulge in politics that had taken her husband’s life in the form of a suicide bomber. After many years however, and many ups and downs, she has become the bulwark of India’s ruling Congress party.
J. Mundra plans on filming the movie as a love story- first as a woman’s love for a man and then, after his death, her love for his country. It is to portray Sonia in a positive light, perhaps to finally put a stop to many who still bristle at having India's fate depending on someone who wasn’t born Indian.
So far it looks like either Preity Zinta or Italian actress Monica Bellucci will play the role of Sonia Gandhi. Zayed Khan is to play Sanjay Gandhi but Rajiv Gandhi has not yet been finalized.
