Something in Delhi.
FICA is pleased to invite you to an evening of film screening and discussion with Norwegian artist and filmmaker Lene Berg on 28th Jan at 5pm at the Vadehra Art Gallery, D-40 Defence Colony.
Berg will be screening her film "Stalin by Picasso" followed by discussion of her work.
Lene Berg was born in Oslo and is currently based in Berlin. Berg primarily works with video, photography and text. By using different medias and fictions in her installations, she explores the relationship between contemporary images and inherited conventions, between clichés and facts, between politics and rules of narration. During the last years she has been particularly focused on the distribution of ideas, and the conditions of artistic freedom in relation to political agendas.
In "Stalin by Picasso or Portrait of Woman with Moustache" (2008) she uses the scandal caused by Pablo Picassos drawing of Josef Stalin in 1953 to highlight the complex relationship between art and politics, between collective perception and individual ex-pression. The public part of the project, three façade-banners, caused controversy both in Oslo and New York during 2008, ironically mirroring what took place in 1953.
Her most recent project, "The Drowned One", was first shown at the Sydney Biennial in 2008. It presents an unusual view on the history of photography, dealing in particular with the relationship between photography and truth, using the rather unknown proto-photographer Hippolyte Bayard as a starting point.
Her project "Gentlemen and Arseholes" (2006), consisting of a video and a book, revolves around the contradictions in art and propaganda during the Cold War. The project focuses on Encounter, a cultural journal published in London and distributed during the 1950s and 60s as a vehicle for the Congress for Cultural Freedom. Berg's approach called into question what was defined as a "liberal conspiracy" and later deemed a successful state sponsored cultural effort carried out by the CIA.
In 2008 she participated in the Sydney Biennial, the Taipei Biennial, was shown at Whitechapel Gallery in London, at Fotogalleriet in Oslo and at Cooper Union in New York

(1) Arario Gallery
521 W 25th Street
January 24, 2009 - February 22, 2009
Opening Reception: January 24, 6-8pm
Curated by Jaishri Abichandani and Thorsten Albertz
Arario Gallery presents Artists in Exile, a group exhibition of works by artists of South East Asian, Middle Eastern, or Indian descent that reside in New York City. The exhibition will be on view from January 24 through February 22, 2009. A reception for the artists will be held at the Gallery on January 24 from 6 to 8pm.
“Exile” has been defined in history as being away from one’s home of birth or origin. In Greek tragedies, to wander away from home meant being exposed without protection from familiar laws, friends and family, and was seen as a fate worse than death. The artists in this exhibition bridge their cultural heritage with their country of residence; they cross reference, reinterpret and integrate cultures to express the myriad of experiences brought about by diaspora. Artists in Exile includes works by Samira Abbassy, Jaishri Abichandani, Mariam Ghani, Pooneh Maghazehe, Sara Rahbar, The Shining Mantis (Ernest Concepion and Mike Estabrook), and Sonali Sridhar and Mouna Andraos.

ANPU VARKEY
DEAD SOULS
MAY 27 – JUNE 10, 2008
OPENING RECEPTION MAY 29, 2008 6:30 – 8:30 PM.
The GUILD ART USA INC. is pleased to present Anpu Varkey’s solo exhibition, ‘Dead Souls’. The works compiled for the exhibition “Dead Souls” by Anpu Varkey are contemplations recorded from over two years of her life lived between London and her hometown Bangalore. Possessing a somewhat self - obsessed voyeuristic personality with two tablespoons of nihilistic misanthropy thrown in, the compositions featured in this compilation are quite random. The works are not informed by any global or local sentiment. They do not try to engage the audience in any manner apart from any energy resulting spontaneously out of the optical and psychological jerks that they transmit. The compositions are structured with a studied laziness and a graceful clumsiness of the wrist. Colors are layered to deftly model out a vibrancy that is centrifugal yet static. Perfect detailing and all misinterpretations resulting from it is subjugated by the hyper intuitive color usage that captures a state of limbo, where time, place and contexts can be dematerialized into nothingness.
The show opens on the 27th of May and continues till the 10th of June. The opening reception will be held at the gallery on the 29th of May from 6:30 – 8:30. Anpu Varkey will be in attendance. We look forward to seeing you at the opening.
