Tagore (1861-1941) became the first non-Westerner to win the literature prize in 1913. He is one of modern India's greatest poets and composer of both the Indian and Bangladeshi national anthems. A prolific writer, he wrote over one thousand poems earning praise and appreciation from the likes of William Butler Yeats and Ezra Pound.
