Farah Malik works at one of the most impressive non-profit organizations in town: Breakthrough. Using her background in Media and Communications from the London School of Economics, Farah has found her raison d'etre: using the media to influence civil society in a positive and constructive way. When we went to do a story on Breakthrough, we were blown away by Farah's vivacious personality and her smouldering looks! Not to mention humbled by her initiatives, such as co-establishing an arts-based initiative for refugee and immigrant women in need: Threads: Drawing Together Women’s Narratives from Our Communities, at the South Asian Women’s Community Centre in Canada.
So what are the little nothings that add whimsical color to this dynamic young woman? EGO found out with some little questions:
What do you do to earn and blow money?
Be a nice little daddy's girl (just kidding). I live way beyond my means having reconciled that the 20's are about being in debt and the thirties for paying it off. I blow all my money on fashion (I think I'm at 50 pairs of shoes now) and gourmet food.
How do you indulge your decadent side?
In the day to day- I shop (that more often ends up being window shopping over real purchases!) and eat lots of fresh fruits, veggies, cheeses and dark chocolate.
Once or twice a year I travel to the Mediterranean.
Do you think monogamy is outdated?
In New York maybe- but in the rest of the world I really really hope not. My biggest fear (it keeps me up at night) is that, in fact, that is the kind of man I might end up with (because that is the large majority).
Non-monogamy is all about restlessness and ego and it comes from needing constant affirmation from different people. To me that is so immature and that kind of multiple-source affirmation, so irrelevant.
What cocktail best describes your personality?
Something with litchi, pomegranate, rose or mint and bursts of sweet but also complex flavor.
If you could go back in time and take credit for any piece of work, what would it be?
Literature/ writing: The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Milan Kundera and Distinction: A social critique of the Judgment of Taste, Pierre Bourdieu; Architecture: Frank Gehry's Guggenheim in Bilbao or the Alhambra in Granada; Music: Songs in the Key of Life (Stevie Wonder)
Who is your idol?
I don't believe in idolizing people.
What makes you fabulous enough to be person of the week?
I'm me!
What do you think is the key to success in life?
Many things in synchronized balance: love, adoration, faith and happiness.
What constitutes a "revolution"?
No such thing anymore- everything's been mediatized, bastardized so we are made to believe that there are revolutionary moments occurring but in reality its all a façade and a spectacle.
